Celtic Style Handcarved Leather Wallet.

I have always been drawn to the Celtic knots.  They not only are they intricately beautiful but the Celtic knot can also elude to a more spiritual meaning. It is an endless twist that weaves throughout a piece, with no beginning or end reminding us of the timeless nature of our spirit.  An eternal loop that coincides with the infinite interlacing of the physical and the spiritual.

 

Often times these beautiful adornments were to be used as omens, or given as the best wishes of longevity or luck depending on the particular knot weaved. 

This wallet was hand carved from vegetable tanned leather with an inner lining of pig skin. The Celtic Knot is carved on the outside, and hand stitched giving the wallet a rustic feel.

Eenie meenie chili beanie, the spirits are about to speak.

When I was a small child I remember my mom saying "Eenie meenie chili beanie, the spirits are about the speak!", and she would follow this up with some fun trick or slide of hand.  This little saying would stick around for years, as a fun joke we shared.  Of course, this saying is from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show but I didn't know that at the time.  

Spirits are a fascinating subject and all the more so because there is something taboo about it.  The final mystery of life, a realm where the living are left to wonder; always searching for proof that something beyond exists.  In the late 1800's and early 1900's Ouija boards became a popular pastime, designed to enlighten (or frighten) the living of those who have passed on.  

This Ouija Board is crafted from leather and has been hand stamped, hand carved and stained on beautiful Herman Oak Leather.  This measures 11 inches by 17 inches and is 12 ounces thick, making this piece very stiff with no need of an extra backing.  It should be noted that due to the nature of leather craft, it is not entirely smooth and also, this does not include a planchet.  It is a beautiful piece on it's own, a piece of art that can be displayed on the wall in a frame or as an interesting curio.

Amazing forgotten Leathercraft

It has been more than a year ago when we decided to create Blue Crow Leather Works. I thought that we would stick with the western gun holsters, as they are so functional and so beautiful.  I had not realized how versatile leather actually is.  It really is an amazing medium.  Not only is the material created by nature, but it is malleable, carve-able, stitch-able and will last almost a life time if taken care of properly.  In a society that has veered off course of craftsmanship for the sake of saving a buck, we have lost the knowledge of how to make our own things and what it takes for something to be made. For the past several years, my family and I have spent time to relearn basic skills that have been forgotten because we are products of a consumer nation that relies on companies to provide the basics.

Nordic Leather Key chain, Odin from Asgard!

I have finally posted this awesome key fob to my Etsy and Ebay store.  I love how this Odin concho looks with the celtic carving.  I also like the weaving of the leather around the whole thing, giving it an authentic feel to this Nordic style.
